Bi-Directional Amplifiers: A Lifeline to Emergency Services

A Bi-Directional Amplifier, or BDA system, is an essential life safety system that makes sure first responders can send and receive crucial radio messages during an emergency. But it’s one that many people have never heard of. Davis-Ulmer Fire Protection Alarm & Detection Manager Jerrad Carpenter explains the ABCs of BDAs.

Q: What is a Bi-Directional Amplifier?

A: A BDA system broadcasts communication signals through a system of amplifiers strategically located inside large buildings. It’s a crucial system that enhances wireless communication between individual emergency personnel inside the structure, support vehicles positioned outside, 911 call centers, and backup recorders that document communications for use in training later on. These systems prevent any delays, interference, or signal loss that can compromise the lives and safety of first responders and building occupants during an emergency.

Q: In what kinds of buildings are BDA systems necessary?

A: BDA systems are essential in structures with physical features that radio signals might struggle to penetrate, like underground areas or buildings with thick walls. For example, a warehouse that is five stories tall and four million square feet of steel and concrete with very few egress points would need a BDA system to ensure that first responders inside the building could communicate with each other from different areas of the warehouse and with trucks stationed outside.

Q: What happens when a building doesn’t have a working BDA?

A: The most infamous example where the presence of a BDA may have saved hundreds of lives is during the aftermath of the September 11 terrorists attacks. At the time, fire codes didn’t require BDA systems, and the World Trade Center towers did not have an adequate system in place. As a result, first responders could only communicate radio to radio—and never heard warnings from the ground that the buildings were about to fall. The National Fire Protection Association has enacted ordinances requiring minimums levels of coverage for Public Safety communication within new buildings as a result of this tragedy.

Q: How often does a BDA system need to be inspected?

A: BDA systems need to be inspected every year to stay up to code.

Q: Who performs the inspection?

A: Professional inspectors are required to be licensed by the FCC in order to perform annual BDA inspections or to re-certify a system every five years. BDA equipment is proprietary, and inspectors have to be certified to work on that particular manufacturer. These pros undergo annual training and work closely with the local jurisdiction to build relationships with the first responders whose communications systems need to work inside the building.

Q: What happens during a BDA system inspection?

A: During a BDA inspection, the system is assessed, tested, and certified to ensure they comply with safety standards and effectively improve in-building wireless communication for emergency services, first responders, and occupants during critical situations.

During a BDA inspection, specialists evaluate the BDA system’s installation, performance, and adherence to regulatory requirements. They conduct tests to verify signal strength, coverage, and reliability across different frequencies to ensure seamless communication for emergency responders within the building. Inspections may also involve confirming compliance with local fire codes and regulations to guarantee the system’s functionality during emergencies. Regular BDA inspections are crucial to maintain the system’s efficacy and ensure it meets the necessary standards for emergency communication.

Q: Does Davis-Ulmer Fire Protection install and service BDA systems?

A: Yes. We consider flawless emergency communication to be an essential part of a comprehensive safety system along with fire alarms and sprinklers. When companies hire us to do all three, we can make sure all three systems work in tandem to provide optimal protection for the building and the people who live or work within it.

Data Center Fire Protection

A data center is an important part of businesses and organizations. Without data centers, many businesses would not be able to function properly. Having fire protection systems in place to prevent fire damage to data centers is necessary to keep companies running smoothly.

What is a Data Center?

A data center is a place where a network of computer systems and components are housed. Data centers store, process, and distribute large amounts of data. Many business activities are reliant on information that is received from data centers and any downtime caused by a fire can cause detriment to a business.

Gaseous Fire Suppression

Due to the importance of data centers in day-to-day operations of many organizations, a fire protection system must be installed in these facilities. In many data centers, a gaseous fire suppression system is preferred over traditional sprinkler systems. Traditional sprinkler systems use water to put out fires. In some cases, water can cause irreparable damage to the equipment in data centers, causing as much damage as a fire itself.

Gaseous fire suppressants are often used in data centers because they do not cause water damage and can put out a fire with little to no downtime for data centers. There are many different types of fire suppressions that can be used including:

  • FM 200: A clean, colorless fire suppressant agent that leaves behind no residue and acts quickly in the event of a fire.
  • Novec 1230: A clean agent fire suppressant that leaves behind no residue and is electrically non-conductive.
  • Inergen: Uses a mixture of nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide to put out fires quickly.

There are many options for fire suppression systems in data centers. If you are unsure which system is right for your application, reach out to a fire protection professional and ask for their advice. You should install a system that will limit damage to your facility, protect the lives of employees, and comply with regulations. Your fire protection system should comply with NFPA 75, the Standard for the Fire Protection of Information Technology.

How a Residential Fire Sprinkler System Adds Value to the Home

home fire sprinklersAre you interested in adding to the current value of your home? One of the quickest ways to do it is by installing a residential fire sprinkler system. A typical fire sprinkler system can stop a fire from spreading throughout a home in about 90 seconds and help you avoid major damage to your home. However, outside of making your home substantially safer, a fire sprinkler system will also be a very valuable feature when you go to sell your home one day, which is why you should consider installing one.

Home fire sprinklers cost on average $1.35 per square foot. This is comparable in cost to carpet upgrades, paving stone driveway or a whirlpool bath.

24/7 PROTECTION FROM FIRES

Some homeowners shy away from installing fire sprinkler systems in their homes because they believe they could ultimately do more harm than good. This could not be further from the truth. Today’s residential sprinkler systems are designed to protect homes 24/7/365 and feature a series of sprinklers strategically placed throughout homes and connected by plastic pipes that are tied into a home’s water main or a storage tank.

Sprinklers are temperature-sensitive and are set to spring into action when a part of your home reaches between 135 and 165 degrees Fahrenheit, and despite what you may have heard, only the sprinkler or sprinklers closest to a fire will go off, so you will not have to worry about your entire home getting wet during a fire. Furthermore, smoke, steam, and cooking vapors will not be a cause for concern, as they will not result in your fire sprinkler system turning on. Fire sprinkler heads can be recessed, have cover plates or be custom colored to fit the aesthetic of your home.

FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS SAVE LIVES AND PROTECT HOMES

More and more people are putting residential fire sprinkler systems into their homes to keep their families, their possessions, and their properties as safe as they can be. You can install one in your home today and get an excellent return on your investment one day when you decide to sell your home. To get more information about residential fire sprinkler systems, call Davis Ulmer at 877-691-3200 to learn about the options for your specific home.

Prevent Your Sprinkler System From Freezing This Winter

winterize your home and sprinkler systemAs the snow hits us here in Buffalo, New York, Davis Ulmer would like to remind our customers to check on the sprinkler systems in their homes and businesses to ensure that pipes are properly protected and heated from the elements. Less than two weeks ago, a sprinkler system in Plainsview, Texas burst after roofers failed to finish installing the roof’s trim before a winter storm hit. Exposed to freezing temperatures, the sprinkler system’s pipes burst, leaving the building drenched in two inches of water. To ensure an accident like this doesn’t happen to you, there are a few precautionary measures to take when the weather gets cold.

Check Your Heating System

Ensure the water running through your sprinkler system does not freeze this winter by checking your heating system as the weather gets cold. Regular maintenance is an important part of running your home or business and winter is the most important time to have your furnace in top shape. While you are checking the heat, also look around your establishment for cracks in windows and drafty areas. Seal up any gaps you find to keep your property warm and safe throughout the coldest months of the year.

Keep Temperatures Up

Even if you aren’t in the office on weekends, it is important to keep the heat running at your business. Buildings with wet sprinkler systems should not allow their temperatures to drop lower than 40 degrees Fahrenheit, so switch your thermostat to low instead of switching it off when you go home on Friday night.

Schedule a Winter Maintenance Appointment

Haven’t gotten around to your sprinkler system’s annual maintenance check? Now is the perfect time to have it looked over to ensure that everything is functioning properly and there are no chances of pipes freezing. To set up your winter appointment, contact us online or give us a call at 877-691-3200. We work with customers in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.

Sprinklers Putting out Landfill Fires

Throughout these blog posts, we have done our best to educate you the reader and the public as a whole on the benefits and necessity of fire sprinklers. We have discussed fire codes, how the seasons affect that need, and how buildings, large and small, absolutely need fire sprinklers nowadays. Every so often we come across a news story that puts a smile on our faces, such as the case with the a news story we came across regarding fire sprinklers and Nantucket, as reported in the Cape Cod Times.

Mary Ann Bragg writes, “A construction debris fire this morning at the town landfill was slowed by a new sprinkler system, Nantucket Fire Chief Mark McDougal said. “Having a system that activated right away saved us a lot of time and effort,” McDougal said.”

Outdoor Fire Protection

While you may not think of fire sprinklers as having an impact on outdoor fires, they absolutely do. Just look at Nantucket. In the past, the landfill has been peppered with fires, as landfills are apt to do. The difference this time around was that a fire sprinkler system was installed, which cut down suppression time by a whole lot. Usually these fires would take hours and, in some cases, even days. Needless to say, fire sprinklers save time, energy, and money – and the cherry on the top? No one was injured!

While the cause of the fire has not been determined, area residents can rest assure that no fire will get out of control. Firefighters can rest easy too; they have backup!

Staying Fire Safe and Vigilant at All Times

19936257_S(1)The Fourth of July weekend has come and gone, and at Davis Ulmer, we hope you had a safe and happy weekend, hanging out with close friends and family. While it’s nice to let loose and celebrate around the holidays, it is prudent that you maintain a level of safety so no one gets hurt. We see this around holidays like the Fourth of July, people getting carried away with good times, but ignoring the possible dangers of fires. No better do we see this in hot, dry areas of the country, like areas out west.

In Yakima, WA, for instance, firefighters and fire officials did everything they can to prevent such tragedies from happening – and some of those tragedies are accidents, even naturally occurring in certain instances, but still fire officials must remain vigilant and impart restrictions. According to Yakima fire officials, “We have a number of fires in houses, roof fires, fires in shrubs, things of that nature that are totally unintentional and accidental and people don’t mean for them to happen but they do end up happening.”

SAFETY FIRST

In the end, we want you to celebrate and have a good time, but you have to be aware of conditions unique to your own neighborhood, whether it is the weather or other conditions. Remember that fires are unique too, and certain areas in the country are different from others. While planning a party or before you start celebrating, be sure to consult local fire officials if you plan to have a fire, no matter how large or small.

Installing Fire Sprinklers in San Francisco’s Rent-Controlled Buildings

bannerOne of the biggest causes of fires is older, rent-controlled buildings. No better do we see than in the San Francisco Bay area where fires are an all too common occurrence. This has led to concerted efforts on the part of officials to change this awful trajectory and according to a Sfweekly.com article, these officials are hard at work and, in particular, Supervisors Jane Kim and David Campos.

Noah Arroyo writes, “These supervisors represent much of the territory where the fires occurred and are trying to set up a Fire Safety Task Force. Possible solutions to the rash of fires include compelling building owners to install sprinkler systems, an idea Kim broached at an April meeting of the Land Use and Transportation Committee. There, the city’s chief housing inspector guessed that about 5,000 buildings lack the kinds of sprinklers that would save lives and property.”

SPRINKLER SYSTEMS SAVE LIVES

It seems that the supervisors simply want to save lives. There is clearly a problem in the Bay area that isn’t being addressed, causing great damage to lives and the local economy. If the installation of fire sprinklers would solve this dilemma, why is it taking so long. Well, building owners are saying no. They believe that installing sprinklers in older buildings will force many tenants to move on.

That seems like a foolish reason to not install fire sprinklers, but what do you think? Is it the responsibility of the building owners to install fire sprinklers in every apartment in their buildings? Or is it the responsibility of the actual tenants? Let us know in the comments below.

What Is the Bringing Safety Home Grant Program?

banner3At Davis Ulmer, we take fire education very seriously and believe that everyone, old and young alike, need to know the ins and outs of fire safety and prevention. Thankfully, the National Fire Protection Association agrees with us. Back in June, they announced it had awarded grants to 16 organizations to fund sprinkler advocacy efforts across North America.

According to this Fire Engineering article, “The Bringing Safety Home Grant Program will assist the grant recipients, including U.S. state sprinkler coalitions and other North American safety advocates, by supporting activities that showcase the importance of requiring home fire sprinklers in new one- and two-family homes.”

FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS REDUCE DEATHS BY 80%

Nowadays it seems like there’s no time for hardly anything, let alone thinking about the fire sprinkler situation in your home, building, or business. There are multiple jobs to do, bills to pay, and other things. Sometimes you need a little nudge, for someone or a group to educate you on the importance of fire sprinklers. Armed with these grants, the recipients are poised to do great and socially beneficial work.

Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA, sums it up best: “Sprinklers are gaining momentum as more residents and policy-makers understand the value of them in new homes. Home fire sprinklers can reduce home fire deaths by about 80 percent and direct property damage by about 70 percent.”

The term life or death gets thrown around all the time now it seems, but when it comes to fire sprinklers, that term is 100% true, so buff up on your education and spread the gospel according to fire sprinklers!

How to Maintain Smoke Alarms

Fire DetectorOften the simplest fire detection and prevention tools are the ones that save the most lives, which is my smoke detectors and alarms are so important. However, even if you have multiple detectors installed throughout your property, they are useless unless they are working properly. Even if you believe your detectors are on and working, you don’t want to wait until an actual fire starts to find out. Several times a year you should test your alarms to ensure they are working as intended. Take a look at the following steps to learn how to correctly test your alarm and fix it if it isn’t working.

TEST ALARMS REGULARLY

The first thing you should do is let everyone else in your home know that you are testing an alarm. You don’t want a member of your family to call the local fire department when there is no fire to put out. Next, you should have someone go to the opposite end of the property to see if they can hear the alarm from the furthest point away from its location. Once they are ready, push and hold the test button for a few seconds until the alarm starts going off.

TEST AND REPLACE BATTERIES

If the alarm doesn’t go off, the first thing you should do is replace the batteries and check to see if the device is on. After doing so, test the alarm again. If it still isn’t working, you may have a faulty device that needs to be replaced.

Repeat this process with every alarm in your home. You should also get a smoke detector test aerosol can and spray near each device. This will let you know whether or not your device will properly detect smoke in the area. For more fire alarm safety tips, keep checking back with the Davis Ulmer blog!

Higher Fire Deaths Show Need for Sprinklers

Higher Fire Deaths Show Need for SprinklersFires aren’t exactly flooding the streets of Massachusetts, but that doesn’t mean 50 deaths from residential fires in just Massachusetts alone this year isn’t being paid attention to. Among them were plenty of young and disabled or simply couldn’t escape the fires, and it’s because of the highest number of fire deaths in Massachusetts occurring that the state is realizing it needs to do something about fires.

FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS SAVE LIVES

Most homes are fitted with smoke alarms these days, but even these devices are nothing when it comes to actually giving residents the time to escape from an already raging fire. This is why sprinkler systems exist, and why Massachusetts is finally looking at changing some of their laws so that multi-room and large family homes need to have sprinklers installed.

A LIFE IS WORTH IT

This would be one of the first major pushes for residential homes to have sprinklers installed, and result in quite a change for many family homes, especially the initial costs that would need to be put worth for the installation of the sprinklers. Of course, it is only a question being proposed to the Board of Building Regulations and Standards. In fact, it had recently been removed from the new building requirements in Massachusetts, to have sprinklers installed in buildings such as apartments and large homes.

Maybe with the rise of fire deaths though, the Board of Building Regulations might just realize how important those sprinklers can be, and make a new decision. For now, 50 deaths in a year for a single state is a reasonable amount of deaths to these people. Hopefully that will change.
